First Grade
Dear First Grade Families,
What a week! My apologies that the weekly newsletter is going out late this week. We had lots going on, with an Open House on Tuesday night and reading assessments during the day. Busy, busy, busy-all in a good way! So happy Friday to everyone! God has certainly blessed us with some gorgeous sunshine to start the weekend off right.
There are just a couple of announcements this week:
We will be having Spirit Dress-up days starting next week. This is a fun way for all the students to show school spirit as we prepare to send our middle-school kids off to the annual LEST tournament in Portland. If your child doesn't want to dress up, that's ok. They can always choose to wear uniforms as usual on any of the days. Here is the theme for each day:
*Thursday, 2/9 - College Day (wear your favorite college gear)
*Friday, 2/10 - Decade Day (dress in your favorite decade - '50s, '60s, '70s, etc.)
*Monday, 2/13 - Pajama Day
Tuesday, 2/14 - Twin/Multiples Day (dress like someone else in our class, with matching shirts, etc.)
Wednesday, 2/15 - Blue and Gold Day (the ultimate in school pride - our colors!)
Your children hopefully showed you their amazing spelling quizzes from this morning. Wow! I was totally blown away with how well they did. Many got 100% correct, and most others only missed one or two. Woo hoo! Way to go, Firsties! Many thanks to you as parents who work so hard to help them practice at home each week. They are loving the pattern of the word families, so it makes for high success rate on the quizzes. It is still so important for them to know how to spell those tricky sight words, so we will work some of those back into our quizzes after we go through all the main word family groups.
Please feel free to send in a manual pencil sharpener with your child if they would like one. They are encouraged to sharpen pencils before school and during snack, lunchtime, etc. but often they need to sharpen during lesson time when it can be distracting. As long as the top stays securely on, I don't mind if they bring personal sharpeners to school.
Lastly, a request...if anyone has any Beanie Babies that they are willing to donate to the class, you could help out our reading program. We have been collecting Reading Buddies that remind us of reading strategies both for reading the words (decoding) as well as understanding the story (comprehension.) For instance, Stretchy Snake reminds us to stretch out sounds in a word, while Digger Dog reminds us to dig for information and details to help us understand what we are reading. So, we are still looking for a raccoon, a dolphin, and a parrot. Any chance you have small versions of any of those that you wouldn't mind parting with? If so, please let me know and thank you in advance for all your support of our classroom.
Enjoy the weekend!
