JOTTINGS IN JANUARY

There is a strange phenomenon that occurs over every Christmas break that I have experienced since I starting teaching…….many moons ago!

Kids return to school as a new and improved version of the same, wonderful kid that they were before Christmas. My theory is that parents feed them booster vitamins for all parts of their development. They are more confident, calmer, more mature physically and emotionally and definitely more sophisticated.

It is an interesting process that seems to occur unbeknownst to the kids. I was told years ago to look for such a thing and sure enough I saw it. Now I tell other teachers to look for it and I think they think it is a real thing too.

Kids are such cool little people! They have ideas which never entered my mind. They will clean tables endlessly with Clorox wipes, even if it means getting a late start on math class. They will give up a few minutes of recess to help a hurt child get to the office for a much needed band-aid. They scramble to help open the north end gates after last recess for cars to park for pickup.

Some of the best parts are their interpersonal interactions with me. Kids sometimes jump up and come to hug Mrs. Luecke and me for no apparent reason. They will share a hug of their favorite stuffy with me. They will confide in me about something a friend is doing which they think is wrong but the friend won’t listen. They will ask for extra help in convincing mom and/or dad to order hot lunch for them. They ask me what I did on my weekend. They tell me I look pretty without glasses. :) They stick up for their class as a whole when challenged by anything or anyone.

They are just cool kids, God’s kids. We need to love them every day in every way and for no reason at all.
