Discovery Program

The National Institute for Learning Development was founded upon the biblical worldview that affirms each individual was created in the image of God and therefore has innate potential to learn and become effective in service to the world.

And God saw everything that he had made, and it was very good - Genesis 1:31

The Discovery Program is a supplemental program established to help students overcome learning difficulties which have caused them to experience frustrations and/or failures in school. The program, accredited by the National Institute for Learning Development, uses intervention techniques in either a one-on-one session or a GET (Group Educational Therapy) session, for approximately three hours per week.

DISCOVERY KEY POINTS

  • The focus of these intense sessions is on continual mediation and stimulations for reducing deficit areas of perception, basic skills and problem solving.
  • Educational therapy is non-tutorial. The focus is not on passing a test or completing an assignment, but to teach the students the skills to become an independent learner.
  • The students learn how to explain and refine their thinking processes.
  • Students DISCOVER who they are as learners in the classroom.
  • The curriculum uses a variety of techniques that reduce a student's academic and perceptual deficits within the contexts of reading, writing, spelling and math
  • The focus is on stimulating the deficit areas. When the student returns to the classroom they work collaboratively with the classroom teacher(s).
  • Discovery is open to non Seattle Lutheran High School, Hope Lutheran and Concordia Lutheran school students.
  • Opening up a new clinic that is housed at Concordia Lutheran School.
  • Providing the area's first GET program (Group Educational Therapy).
