Grace is a scandal when viewed through the eyes of meritocracy. Jonah complains that his efforts at prophesying are beside the point, since God is forgiving. The workers who put in a full day's work complain that those who worked only an hour are paid the same wage. By human standards, grace is not fair. Neither does it make sense that the owner goes back time after time continuing to hire those without work. When we are lost and forgotten, thank God we receive more than we have earned.
