One of the great ironies of our time is that our nation is called “United” when most historians say we are more divided than any time since the Civil War. This is a sobering reality in which to live, and in some ways is the price of our freedom to think and say what we want, even and especially when we disagree. The same risk is there for the church at large and individual congregations. What is it that can bring Christians together in unity that can model a path to greater unity for the world around us? We’ll consider the words of Jesus and Paul on this topic along with some inspiration from the classic movie “Independence Day” where the plot involves a need for all of humanity to unite for the sake of human survival.

BIG IDEA QUESTION: Describe a time when you were part of a group that was united in its purpose. What was that like? If you haven’t part of such a group, describe what is hard about a group not being united.
